Last weekend, I went on a fact finding mission with Randy. We had been to a wedding and once we got back to Enid we visited two places I had heard about but hadn't been to visit. The first was a used book store - Book Trees & etc. Barbara DeVault is the owner and she has a wide variety of books. I encourage you to visit her store. While there Randy bought "A Gentle Breed" The Story of Bathsheba "A Town Without Men". It is a fictionalized bit of Oklahoma History.

Oklahoma
tales give us the story of an Oklahoma town formed by women. No men
allowed. Not even male animals. This was before the land run of 1893.
They were a group of women that had been used/abused by men and hated
them, therefore they formed a town of women only. The town was
supposedly formed between Enid and Perry. It's a tale that no one can
actually prove but still lingers on in Oklahoma history!
DeVault's
book is interesting. In the beginning the language was horrible. Some
of the words she used I doubt were even used in 1893 but after the
first chapter very little bad language showed up. It's a western love
story. I like a little sex in a book once in a while but I prefer the
kind that leaves more to your imagination than actually spelling it all
out. DeVault has only 2 areas where she expounds on the sexual
relationship of the cowboy Jake and one of the women from Bathsheba.
They aren't too bad but as I said I prefer to imagine it myself. Can any
author beat the imagination of the reader? :) when it comes to sex? or food?
Remembering my quote from another book, this book did make me want to do some research.
I encourage you to visit this link and read the short history of Bathsheba, the town without men.
The
book is published by DeVault Enterprises. It has some misspellings and a
few editing mistakes but it was a good book to read. Probably an
average story but with the history involved and the concept of a town
without men - made it very interesting.
A Gentle Breed: The Story of Bathsheba, "A Town Without Men"
This is the link for the book at Amazon - which is priced at $9.99
however you can buy it directly from the author for $5.00 at her used
bookstore Book Trees & etc at 2228 W Willow Road in Enid, Ok. -
Get her to autograph it!!
The second place we visited
for my first time was across the street south from the used bookstore
and it is Davinci's. That was a nice relaxing break for a hot day! I
enjoyed the comfortable chairs and my Chai Tea Latte. Randy enjoyed his
Chocolate Mocha! We had a great day.
